This is a short video clip of me playing Asteroids on the Atari 2600 VCS retro video games console.
Released by Atari in 1981.
Asteroids on the 2600 features big chunky coloured asteroids in place of the cool vector graphics of the arcade original, which is really the best you could expect from the 2600 at the time. A hacked version was created in '99 which featured modified graphics that although not true vectors, certainly looked a little more like the original.
Gameplay wise, the asteroids have less variety in their trajectories, making their movement more predictable, and your ship doesn't have smooth, full 360 degree rotation, limiting how finely you can aim at a distance.
Despite these limitations though, it's still fun to play, and if you're an Atari 2600 playing, arcade Asteroids fan, this should probably keep you happy.
This and the other retro gaming clips on this site aren't intended as full game reviews, but are simply to give viewers who weren't around when these games were popular, an idea of what video games used to be like.
